King of the road: Prince Harry sets off on his trip across the desert
Harry on a Harley... look away, Charles: Prince dons a red bandana and aviator shades, then hits Arizona highway on a £11,000 classic bike

They are pictures certain to gladden the hearts of Prince Harry’s female fans.
Looking tanned, fit and macho, the Prince jumped on a classic Harley-Davidson motorbike on Friday and roared off across the Arizona desert.
One person unlikely to be impressed by his exploits, however, is his father Prince Charles, who doesn’t share his sons’ passion for motorbikes. Harry owns a Ducati 848 and a classic Triumph, and Prince William a Ducati 1198. But Charles admitted last year: ‘I hate motorbikes. My sons are interested in them. I can’t even get my balance on them.’
But unlike the 1969 counter-culture movie – starring Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper as freewheeling hippies riding customised Harleys on a lone odyssey across the US – Harry was accompanied by a security entourage as he embarked on his weekend road trip.

An eyewitness said: ‘Harry was grinning from ear to ear and he jumped on the bike like a natural. He didn’t look the least bit nervous when he roared off but he had quite an entourage with him. They kept their distance as it was clear he was just enjoying the freedom of being on the open road.’

The Prince was enjoying a day off from an eight-week helicopter course at Gila Bend Air Force base in Imperial Valley, Arizona, where he is undergoing advanced training as an Apache pilot.
He left the base at midday on Friday in a silver Dodge SUV accompanied by a Suburban 4x4. A witness said: ‘Harry was in the Dodge with a driver. The backup car had his bodyguards in it – two big male bodyguards and a tiny girl who looked out of place but who was packing a gun.
‘They drove across the desert, 95 miles, from Gila Bend to Scottsdale, which is where the Harley-Davidson dealership is.
‘As they arrived at the Harley shop, a dark-grey metallic SUV turned up which had two more burly guys in it. One of the guys was clearly an experienced motorbike rider as he got on a Harley next to Harry and took off with him.’
Harry’s bike was a black Harley-Davidson Softail Classic which the garage, Hacienda Harley-Davidson, hires out for $150 (£95) a day.

Knotting a red and white bandana around his neck, Harry grabbed a maroon and black lumberjack-style shirt and aviator sunglasses from the boot of his car and posed for a picture (taken by one of this bodyguards) next to his Harley. He then roared off accompanied by a guide from the Harley-Davidson dealership and a bodyguard. Tailing the riders were two cars containing his bodyguards.
The eyewitness said: ‘Harry looked like he definitely knew his way around a motorbike.
‘It was Friday rush-hour traffic. He was on the freeway for a while before they hit the open road. He was weaving in and out of commuter traffic. He didn’t even have proper leathers on or gloves. He rode like a pro.’
Last night, a staff member at the Harley-Davidson dealership said: ‘We are not allowed to say anything about Prince Harry being here. We’ve been sworn to secrecy. But he’s seriously cool.’
The trip comes at the end of his stint in the US. He caused headlines at the beginning by enjoying a night of fun with tattooed cocktail waitress Jessica Donaldson. And things continued in a similar way after his Harley trip, with Harry partying at a Las Vegas nightclub with a mystery blonde.
The Prince and three friends were at the Tryst club in the Wynn Casino at 1.30am yesterday, drinking Grey Goose vodka and dancing.
A reveller said: ‘Harry looked very close to one girl who looked to be in her early 20s. He was dancing with her and they had their arms around each other. They were hugging and at one point he had his hands around her waist as they danced. They all left together at about 3am, Harry still looking very close to the girl.’

Flanked by stunning scenery and cheering crowds, the 27-year-old was coached by Adriana Behar, winner of two Olympic silver medals and one of the world's most outstanding beach volleyball players of her generation.
They were joined by three other top Brazilian volleyball players Jackie Silva, Para and Carlao. The three-a-side match gave him the chance to show off his ball skills.
The women players are known for their skimpy outfits, but they were modestly dressed in shorts and vest tops for the game.

Harry, who adores the sport, was an enthusiastic participant, laughing and joking with the youngsters and cheekily pulling their shirts to stop them getting to the ball.
The prince began his day by starting and then taking part in the mile-long fun run in aid of Sports Relief, raising money for local charities.
Other runners included local children and Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
Despite the 90 degree heat - even at 9 o'clock in the morning - the prince and his Scotland Yard police protection team completed the course in 8 minutes 32 seconds.
Prince Harry couldn't risk a dig at his brother as the royal raced through the finish line with the paper image of his brother strapped to his face, knowing full well the images would tickle Prince William, who is currently on deployment in The Falklands.

It appears the joke mask was a spur-of-the-moment jape - aimed at earning Harry bragging rights against his brother when he returns home next week.
Harry is thought to have been given the mask by another runner, one among hundreds of children and adults taking part in the event in temperatures well into the 90s.
An aide said: 'He thought it would be a bit of fun and give his brother a laugh.' He hadn't planned to wear the mask but had spotted it on another runner and borrowed it.
'It took everyone by surprise but he thought it was a real hoot and would make his brother laugh,' said a source.
Harry was joined for part of the run by 17-year-old Alice de Oliveura Correio, a leading 200-metre runner and long-jump athlete. She said: "To run with 'William' was fantastic, very cool."
William has got his own back on his brother in the past and usually makes reference to his red hair when on a foreign tour.

Both have agreed to keep their relationship secret and will only meet up behind closed doors for secret dates.
Last night the pair were said to be together at a mutual friends house in London.

A source told The Daily Star Sunday: 'Harry saw how tough it was for his brother William and Kate when they first started seeing each other.
'He knows the enormous in them drove them apart at one point and doesn't want that to happen to him and Mollie.
'They want to carry on seeing each other but will only do so inside the private homes of very few close friends they trust.'

But it seems although the pair have vowed to keep their relationship under wraps with no public dates, they have been seen out together three times.
Harry, 27, and Mollie, 24, were rumoured to have been set up by the royal's cousin Zara Phillips.
It is thought Zara, who knows Mollie's bandmate Una Healey, knew the pair would hit it off.
The 30-year-old royal knows Una through her husband Mike Tindall who is friendly with the singer's rugby playing fiance Ben Foden.
A source told Katie Nicholl in the Mail On Sunday last week: 'They’re having a lovely time together but she won’t say anything publicly because she knows that will mean the end of it.
'She loves the publicity so she is happy to drop a few hints and keep people guessing.'
The couple are said to have first met at a polo event in Surrey in July 2010 but as Mollie was in a relationship it is thought her and Harry got together some time after their split.
And Mollie is certainly already feeling the 'Harry effect.'

Team GB Ambassador Prince Harry cracked a string of Olympic jokes at a reception yesterday – ribbing Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt about his bell clanging disaster, the scandal of empty seats at Olympic venues and even the drugs furore surrounding teenage Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen.
Echoing the antics of his notoriously gaffe-prone grandfather, Prince Phillip, the third in line to the throne entertained a group of young sports hopefuls in the gardens of Clarence House with a host of asides about the London Games.
Top of his list was Mr Hunt who was left cringing after the prince reminded him about his by now infamous TV blunder when a bell he was ringing at an event to celebrate the opening of the Olympics flew off its handle – and narrowly avoided hitting a group of women.

Judging by his expressions in the stands tonight, it looked like Prince Harry was battling every sprint and fighting every turn with Team GB's cyclists.
The charismatic royal was Great Britain's unofficial cheerleader in the velodrome, leaping to his feet with delight as Sir Chris Hoy won his sixth Olympic gold in the keirin and 20-year-old Laura Trott earned her second of the Games in the women's omnium.
And collapsing with his head in his hands as Victoria Pendleton fell at the final hurdle in her last ever race before retiring from the sport.

The 20-year-old team pursuit gold medallist raced to an early lead and Harry punched the air as she whizzed across the finish line eight tenths of a second ahead of fourth placed Hammer.
He was barely back on his bum before Pendleton appeared on the track to take part in the second race of her sprint final against sworn rival Anna Meares of Australia.
The Briton was relegated from the first race for straying out of her sprint line, making race two a must-win for Pendleton.

Prince Harry was launched into a new leading role in the royal family last night when he took centre stage at the Olympic closing ceremony.
In his most important solo Royal engagement yet, the third in line to the throne was selected as the figurehead for the spectacular farewell to the Games, which the Queen opened two weeks ago.
The high-profile task of celebrating Britain’s glory at London 2012 fell to the 27-year-old prince, sitting alongside the Duchess of Cambridge, after a succession of prominent appearances in the crowd at many of the history-making events of the competition.

Last night in a stirring written message, Harry said the Games had been ‘extraordinary’, and added: ‘They will stay in the hearts and minds of people all over the world for a very long time to come.
‘I congratulate all the athletes who have competed. They have shown us that there are few boundaries to human endeavour.’
The spirit of the Olympics, he said, represented ‘a magnificent force for positive change’. The athletes, he said, had ‘captured the imagination of the world’.
His appearance on behalf of the Queen also cemented his image in the public eye as a prince of the people, a down-to-earth ambassador for what has been widely acclaimed one of the best things to happen to Britain for decades.
Senior royals including The Queen and Prince Charles have made a point of leaving the Games to the younger members of the family notably Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry who were official Team GB Ambassadors.
Charles attended the Queen’s official Buckingham Palace reception for heads of state as well as the opening ceremony followed by the men’s cycling and badminton on the opening Saturday before heading off to Scotland on holiday.
