A Brit of history: One Direction draw record breaking 15,000 crowd to Today show appearance in New York... and announce 3-D movie
By Amelia Proud
It was One Direction mania on Tuesday as the quintet celebrated the release of their album Take Me Home with an unforgettable performance on the Today show in New York.
Over 15,000 screaming fans greeted the X Factor's most successful product in Rockefeller Plaza; many of the dedicated fans had camped out for as long as five days in the freezing cold and rain.

One Direction MANIA: Harry Styles throws himself into the historic moment as he performs on the Today Show at Rockefeller Plaza, New York on Tuesday
But they didn't need warming up when they finally got a glimpse of Harry, Liam, Niall, Zayn and Louis.
It has to rank with the epoch-defining moment those other British sons - The Beatles - appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 (back then, many dismissed them as a sugary pop band too and 1-D have written five songs on their new album).
The assembled throng was bigger than any crowd in the show's history, according to co-host Al Roker.
They came, they saw, they conquered: One Direction - Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne - drew record crowds to the Today show after fans camped out for as long as five days
Overawed: Harry thanked the fans for their show of support in a city that's been so affected by Superstorm Sandy
Iconic: The band performed in front of London telephone boxes but they hail from Yorkshire, Cheshire, the West Midlands and Ireland
Overwhelmed: The boys are getting used to adulation, but this was something else
The boys, who hail predominantly from northern England, started the performance with best known hit What Makes You Beautiful before making a special announcement during a chat with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie.
'We are going to do our first-ever movie and it's going to be in 3-D and it's coming to cinemas near you on the 30th of August, 2013,' Naill Horan told the rapturous crowd.
Of course it was The Beatles who last made the pop movie a thing of wonder in A Hard Day's Night, Help! and the much less mainstream Magical Mystery Tour, the Spice Girls tried with Spice World but failed.
They then performed Live While We're Young and fan Little Things.
Heating things up: It was a miserable morning in New York but the plaza was on fire when the British boys arrived
Causing a storm: Zayn and Liam sang their hearts out for the huge crowd
Dapper: The boys opted for their usual smart casual attire
The boys then thanked the crowd for coming out despite the difficulties the New York area has recently faced in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
'I think for us it's unbelievable to see the fans support,' Harry said.
'I think in spite of everything that happened, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that's been affected by Hurricane Sandy and to see everyone come out still when everything's happened is absolutely amazing, it means so much to us.'
Britain's No.1 Harry: Young Mr Styles has supplanted even Prince Harry in the affections of those on either side of the Atlantic
Camped out: One Direction fans have been camped outside Rockefeller Plaza in New York for five days to catch a glimpse of the band who are due to appear on the Today Show on Tuesday

Cue the screams... Shirtless Harry Styles and Niall Horan strip down much to the delight of One Direction fans
The boys of One Direction have the ability to make girls weak at the knees just by simply breathing.
So it's uncertain what the exact affect images of shirtless Harry Styles and Niall Horan could potentially have on the band's fans.
Pictured showcasing their toned physiques, the boys, both 19, appeared to misplace their tops in a few cheeky Twitter snaps.
What happened to your shirt? Harry Styles shows off some off his tattoo collection in shirtless Twitter snap
In the two shots of Harry, the curly haired teenager has clearly been caught off guard as he appears to be mid-sentence.
Pointing as he stares directly into the camera lens, Styles puts a few tattoos from his growing collection on display.
With the images causing quite a buzz on the Twittersphere as they circulate at a rapid pace, fans of the What Makes You Beautiful singer had only praises for the heartthrob.
One admirer tweeted: '{NEW PICTURE} of Harry shirtless... Can you get pregnant from this?'
While another wrote: 'What I want: Harry Styles. Shirtless. Now.'
Can you get pregnant from this?': Fans from all over the world took to Twitter to post messages of approval
Meanwhile a photo of Harry's Irish bandmate Niall was also doing its rounds on the micro-blogging site on Sunday.
Proving that he's been pumping some iron in the gym, Horan looked confident as he walked through a hallway in a pair of blue tracksuit bottoms as he flashed his designer underwear.
And again sending supporters into hysterics, a message posted by one fan read: 'Niall Horan shirtless will be the death of me.'

Heading in One Direction! Louis Tomlinson puts Doncaster Rovers FC takeover disappointment behind him as he enjoys a driving experience day out
By James Leyfield
That's more like it: He did manage to put his pearly whites on show a few times
The singer's driving experience came one day after he took to his Twitter to reveal his bid to buy Doncaster Rovers had fallen through.
The One Direction star was hoping to raise funds to purchase his hometown team but after his Crowdfunder campaign - which charged fans £12,000 to spend 10 minutes with him and £250 for a selfie - fell short of its £2million target, his bid has been axed and he claimed he 'was misled'.
Louis - who is worth around £14million, according to a recent Sunday Times Rich List - wrote on Twitter: 'I'm absolutely gutted the Doncaster Rovers deal is not going ahead. I am desperate for the club to be given the recognition it deserves
